For over 25 years Tom Balsley has explored virtually every conceivable landscape architectural expression. He has won design competitions and awards for landscapes ranging from Martha Stewart’s summer residence and the Trump Tower waterfall to public open spaces throughout the US including New York City’s Gantry Plaza Park, Peggy Rockefeller Plaza, and at Balsley Park on 57th street where his design contribution to the city’s environment was recognized with the park’s renaming.

The deep forest is nature’s supreme garden. But for some 200 years our native forests have been hosting a big drunken binge of logging—with a resulting hangover that will last for centuries. Here we are invited to seat ourselves in butterfly chairs and observe the dialogue between logs and seedlings, loss and hope. Do these butterfly chairs present us with a kinetic representation of the difficulty of stranding upright?
